Curvex cal. 370 black dial with diamonds

Postby mobile1 on Tue Mar 09, 2010 4:27 pm

I've bought this watch a few days ago.
The case is 14k solid gold. Inside the case the number is 370 615.
I think that the model name is "executive" or "executive II", someone can confirm?

Welcome welcome welcome!

And thanks for sharing the picture. Nice photos of a beautiful watch.

It looks like an executive dial, but I thought the crystals were faceted and the cases were shaped to fit that crystal. But, I don't own one so I can't say for sure.

I have many examples in my book and they all have faceted crystals. Some have slightly different dials as sell with 4 diamonds on a 1950 model and no square marker shown at the 6:00 position on a 1947 & 1948 editions (although those could just be slight illustration differences).

It's an early Executive II, which is the 370 version of the very popular Executive I, which had featured the 440 movement. The crystal, as Mike noted, is an incorrect replacement, although many people prefer the plain crystal as the facets do interfere with clearly viewing the dial. It's quite common to see Executives (as well as any of the many other Gruen watches that used faceted crystal at this time) with plain crystals.

The Executive II is a little bigger (about 4mm longer) than the Executive I, and has a somewhat greater degree of curvature. They are less frequently seen than the 440 version, which is one of the most common of solid gold Curvexes. Yours would likely date to around 1950, as that seems to be the transition year from the 440 version to the 370. Later versions usually feature the five diamond dial. The cases of both versions were made by the William B. Ogush Co.

Thank you so much for your informations.
Do you think I could find a faceted crystal?
Another question, the seller gave me a Gruen box too, it's a like a grey plastic clamshell.
I don't think that is the right one... do you?

The Curvex boxes are either black and Ivory plastic or Maroon and Ivory plastic they have Curvex on both
the black and Ivory boxes were for the solid gold watches

I am saying plastic they may be Bakerlite ????

The Clamshell case may be an earlier Curvex model Calibre :311 but I have only seen these in a blue Bakerlite
They are very rare

If you could post a photograph of the Clamshell case I may be able to varify this

I don`t think this is a curvex box its probably a veri-thin box
The curvex calibre : 311 boxes were a marbled blue bakerlite
and was a verticle box opening up side to side
It is hard to explain but I have only seen one

This is the Maroon and Ivory box

If the right one for the solid gold model is black and ivory, i'll wait for a "black and ivory" one...

Thank you.
